A: A semen analysis measures multiple parameters of both the semen (liquid component) and the sperm cells. First, we assess the volume and viscosity of the sample and ensure the appearance is normal. Next, we take a look under the microscope to calculate the concentration of sperm measured in million / mL. Motility is assessed by counting how many sperm are moving versus nonmoving. Progressive motility refers to what percentage of the sperm are moving well, rather than twitching or swimming in circles. Morphology is calculated by looking at the sperm under a higher magnification to better see the head, midpiece, and tail and using a strict criteria to define which ones are normal. In addition to analysis of the sperm, other cell types that may be present in the sample are assessed by both count and morphology.
Q: When will I receive my results?
A: Patients can expect to hear from the andrology lab staff within 3 business days from the date of the analysis.
Q: What happens to the sample once it is done being analyzed?
A: After testing, samples are discarded into a biomedical waste bin. Discarded samples are disposed of according to state guidelines to ensure that there is no risk of transfer.
Q: How can I be sure my sample won’t be confused with another?
A: We only process one sample at a time in the lab to ensure there is no chance for sample mix-up. Starting with verification of identity by driver’s license or other photo ID at sample drop-off, we ensure that the correct name and DOB are written on your sample container by you. The sample is then brought to the lab where an andrologist will verify that it has been received and will perform verification checks throughout analysis.
Q: How much does a semen analysis cost?
A: The cost of a semen analysis depends on your insurance coverage. If your insurance does not cover any part of the analysis or if we are not in network with your insurance, the self-pay cost is $175 to be paid at the time of sample drop-off.
Q: What can I do to improve semen parameters?
A: Depending on the results of analysis, we may recommend different treatment options. For patients with normal results, the best way to aid in sperm production is by living a healthy lifestyle. We recommend eating a diet high in antioxidants and limiting exposure to exogenous toxins such as cigarette smoke, alcohol and/or marijuana usage. In addition, zinc supplementation may be considered to compound the antioxidant action of a healthy diet. Sperm production takes about 72-90 days from start to finish so it is important to be consistent with any lifestyle changes to see results in semen analysis.
